Shearometer |
An alternative measuring device used in
determining the gel strength of a drilling fluid is the Shearometer. The
set includes two 5-gram, 3.5 x 1.4 inch hollow shear tubes and a sample
cup with a graduated scale mounted in the center of the cup base. The
scale measures gel strength in pounds per 100 square feet. A heavier (20
gram) shear tube with weight support is available for testing heavier muds
and is specifically designed for testing high gel strength drilling
fluids. It is common for 10 minute gels to reach 35 lb/100ft2 and drilling
conditions and economics will determine the need to reduce gel strengths.
