OFI Testing Equipment, Inc. Awarded Patent for Model 900 Viscometer
HOUSTON, Texas—September 27, 2004 — The United States
Patents and Trademark Office recently granted Patent No. 6,776,028
to OFI Testing Equipment, Inc. (OFITE) for the invention "Induction
Sensor Viscometer."
The inventor, Rick Lukay of OFITE, describes the invention as
a rotational viscometer, which employs an electrical field sensor
to measure the induced angle of rotation of a bob by a sample substance. A
processor calculates the angle of displacement of the bob and transmits
readable output of a sample characteristic in accordance with determined
calculations based on, among other things, the sleeve rotation
velocity and the bob displacement.
The value of the patent rests in the ability of the viscometer
to provide a high degree of accuracy over the operational range,
while its simple mechanical and electrical configuration makes
it easier to maintain. In addition, the viscometer meets
American Petroleum Institute (API) specifications.
Marketed as the "Model 900 Automated Viscometer," this

- Como parte de su esfuerzo para producir dise˜os innovativos
de intrumentos para la industria petrolera, OFI Testing Equipment,
Inc. (OFITE) ha desarrollado el primer Medidor de Hinchamiento
Lineal, que es capaz de ensayar dinamicamente los efectos que ejercen
los fluidos de perforacion sobre las formaciones de lutitas.
La investigacion de las caracteristicas de hinchamiento de las
formaciones de lutitas es vital en la seleccion del adecuado fluido
de perforacion, para brindar maxima inhibicion y estabilidad del
hueco perforado. Mientras se perfora un pozo, una formacion lutitica
comenzara inmediatamente a hincharse si el fluido de perforacion
no es completamente compatible con dicha formacion. Este hinchamiento
producira muchos problemas, tales como el embolamiento de trepano,
arrastre de ca˜eria, deslizamiento del hueco, y otros problemas
relacionados a las arcillas tipo "gumbo". De esta manera,
la seleccion previa de un apropiado fluido de perforacion o durante
la operacion de perforacion, puede ser altamente beneficiosa para
alcanzar un hueco estable.
Otros modelos de medidores de hinchamiento existentes en el
mercado estan dise˜ados para ensayar lutitas con fluidos
en condiciones estaticas. Sin embargo, los fluidos circulan mientras
se esta perforando, por lo que el ensayo de muestras de lutitas
en condiciones estaticas, no siempre provee lecturas fidedignas.
El Medidor de Hinchamiento Lineal OFITE es el unico medidor
de hinchamiento que existe en el mercado capaz de ensayar dinamicamente
